The reason I brought up the shield in the first place, is that it seem to me to be the first weapon that could only be used by man against other men. Once you have shields, you have war. It could were war first got it's start. Patrick

But you know how it is. If anyone found a dozen of the oversized bowls interior leather-strapped to the left forearms of dozen skeletons in a single site, with everything violently scraped and interpenetrated by pole-shaped cutting tools, still grasped in the bones of right hands, the first thought will always be 'what a bizarre gardening accident'... unless, of course, the decedents are believed to have been related to modern Europeans...

OBMO, flat, wooden and full of knife-marks could as easily be describing a vigorously-used dinner table. What separates that from a shield? A handle? a nice iconic image painted on it?

That depends on who you ask. Even if they have a diagram on the back showing exactly how to use them and are penetrated with numerous pointy wood, flint and metal objects, there are lots of people who want us to believe they were really some other kind of tool for completely peaceful applications.
