Hello everybody !
I new to this tribe and need help and advice urgently.
I live in Argentina, Southamerica. I`m a dancer and at a turning point in my life , I realized I have adeep vocation to ethinc, folk, tribal artistic expression , specially related to movement. Here in southamerica there are no dance ethnology career so I have to do it on my own. Can it work out...?
Do I have to study anthropology , even though the career is mostly focused on political matters here in Buenos Aires.
How do I start?
I appreciate and shall be very gratefull on any advice......
Gracias

  • If you want to go to graduate school to get the training, proximity to experts in the area study of the Anthropology of Dance, make career connections, etc., and you have not yet completed your undergraduate degree, you should contact graduate programs that you're interested in attending and ask them what their admissions requirements are and generally what types of backgrounds their students & professors have. Many programs include online biographies of current grad. students and professors, what they're working on, etc.

While you're completing your undergraduate education, or if you already have, while you're thinking about where to apply for grad school, you should read everything you can about the anthropology of dance (important ethnographies, papers, authors, theory, journals, class syllabi, documentaries, trends in this area, etc.). Search the websites of anthropology departments and look for people working on what you'd like to. Email them!

Provided you are up to speed (or can get yourself there) on how to do the type of research you want to do, you should seriously consider doing your own projects. This may help you a lot come admissions time (especially if no one else is doing what you're doing) and farther along as the basis of your MA.

In the States, you might try searching for "Performance Studies" programs (NYU and Northwestern University come to mind). I think that the Anthropology of Dance (as such) is bigger in England [www.roehampton.ac.uk/pg/da/], with actual programs.

You might also try emailing this person, it looks like their experience may suit your background: www.stanford.edu/dept/danc...shion.html

Finally, where you are located, there are likely some academics doing what you want to do, though perhaps not in the political science oriented anthro departments in Buenos Aires. Maybe the people that do this type of research are in arts departments, dance, history departments, etc.

    Good luck!
    • An undergraduate degree and masters program will take several years - I am not sure if you have already being earning academic credits. What do you want the outcome to be? Do you want to study dance and participate/learn a variety of dance styles, so that you will be qualified to teach dance? Or, do you want to do academic research related to how people express themselves through dance around the world and then publish/teach on this subject? If what you want is to teach dance (and you are not yet on the road to earning academic qualifications), you may want to do the research independently (studying, travelling, etc.) and then open a studio. Just some thoughts... sounds like a fascinating and well worthwhile subject matter to explore - 'the ethnology of dance" - go for it!

you know, Dance Commander is currently working on her doctorate in dance, and had some time heavily involved in ethnographies/anthro, very interesting stuff. she's out of the country for another week or so, but she'd be an excellent person to hit up and hear about it from the front lines.

    best of luck

You most definately will need to do some formalized study by enrolling in advanced university classes, but, in the meantime i suggest looking on amazon.com and find some books on ethnographic study, how to do ethnographies, anthroplogy of dance and just plain anthroplogy. purchase those that catch your eye. this will give you a basis. I do not have my PhD in visual anthro yet (but plan to one day) - i do however still do research on my own. and there is no reason for you not to embark on some as well. read the books and get an idea of what the reseach/ethnographic process is, make your connections, and get going.
