hello all
im planning on doing a traditional ethnographic survey at burning man this year in the hope of creating some good data to work with in the future.
i dont have much of a goal in mind other than data collection though i am particularly interested in the role that burning man plays in identity construction and the way that relates to community. and also the waysthat sexual experimentation at burning man interact with sexual identity.
anyways, just looking for some suggestions about works that might inform such a study. ive already read afterburn and am about to tackle temporary autonomous zones but any suggestions are appreciated!

Re: burning man anthropology references
Wed, April 12, 2006 - 10:26 AMHi there,
I'm an Athro major and my first burn was last year.
I would suggest doing post burn interviews as well.
BM affected me more afterward than nessesarily during.
I can't get into it on a public board though.
Of course, there are many people there that don't get the whole concept of bm being a "community" and are only there to party and have sex. But overall, I think the overwhelming feeling throughout the community is acceptance in any and everyway. Being accepted plays a huge role in how a person relates to their community.
On a side note, during my senior year we had a symposium and a call for student papers. Well, one student did an entire "enthnographic" report on Burning Man. After her presentation it turned out that she hadn't even BEEN to BM. The teachers pretty much ripped her a new one. -

Re: burning man anthropology references
Wed, April 12, 2006 - 11:37 AMwell it would be interesting to see how people interacted with the idea of community even if they didn't feel that it was an accurate word to describe their experience. they certainly deal with the idea of it at burning man and evaluate it and compare it to their own experiences and ideas of what community is. it would be interesting to see how such an evaluation changed or not as they became more and more involved in the event. -

Wed, April 12, 2006 - 11:39 AMor if they didn't become more involved and why. what it did or did not provide for them. or perhaps they already had such needs provided for more than abundantely in other ways and didn't want to go through the possible downsides of drugs and dust etc. to have such needs met.

Re: burning man anthropology references
Thu, April 13, 2006 - 7:59 PMthere's been at least one paper already published with AAA via the society for the anthropolgy of consciousness.
The abstract of the paper is on the second page.
sacaaa.org/2003abstracts.doc
Also, there's been theme camps in the past that actually do statistics at burning man. If they were doing it again, that would be a great project to participate in, and you could sneak in your own data questions. -

Re: burning man anthropology references
Fri, April 14, 2006 - 1:44 AMhmmm... lee gilmore wrote a paper for the afterburn report that sounds familiar to that. but that abstract sounds a bit more hardcore than what was in afterburn. i'll definately hunt around for it. -

There is also an edited volume of essays edited by Lee Gilmore and Mark Van Proyen. The book is "Afterburn: Reflections on Burning Man"

Re: burning man anthropology references
Tue, July 25, 2006 - 3:07 PMThat sounds really cool. I've been kicking around the idea to try to do something similar maybe with an emphasis on intentional community, and how it has spread. I've been to PDF, a regional type event a few times, and hopefully will be able to make it to black rock city next year. Good luck and please post a link to what you end up with.

Expect to hear lots of "No Spectators" rhetoric...

Re: burning man anthropology references
Tue, August 15, 2006 - 7:49 AMi met a man in goa this year who said his son was in the ph.d program at stanford and was writing about burning man. you might try poking around on the stanford website to find him.
also, a friend of mine from uchicago, tony d'andrea, wrote his thesis about nomadic counterculture in ibiza and goa, and it will soon be forthcoming from routledge. his website is: home.uchicago.edu/~afdandre/ . you'll probably find some of his work to be relevant.

Re: burning man anthropology references
Wed, August 16, 2006 - 8:55 PMI think there should be a study done on the environmental impact of Burning Man. The amount of pollution it causes must affect the fragile eco system of the desert.
On a social psychological level, it would be good to explain the apparent lack of respect towards women in such a chaotic " rave " environment that has lead to assualt and even rape on the playa year after year. See DPW statistics on rape. -

Thu, August 17, 2006 - 10:08 AMwell, bmorg is required to do a study on that topic every year. -
